I've always found MPEG Streamclip to be just as easy to use as DVDxDV, with nearly the same steps. You can set in and out points in MPEG Streamclip just as easily, and exporting them out works quickly. Admittedly, using the "Export to DV..." setting in Streamclip usually gives me a .dv file that still requires rendering in Final Cut, but the best method is actually to choose "Export to Quicktime..." and choose "DV/DVCPRO NTSC" from the pop up menu in the resulting dialog box.

Just make sure that if you’re going to use the freeze frame to stop your action, and your video source is interlaced (like like most standard DV, or a 1080i source for HD) use the De-interlace video filter to get rid of the jitter that might appear if you use a freeze frame of something in motion. The filter can be found under Effects>Video Filters>Video>De-interlace .

You won’t be able to see the jitter in your Viewer or Canvas windows in Final Cut, and you won’t notice it until you play it back on a real monitor or television. If your final destination is broadcast, De-interlace can save you a lot of headaches on freeze frames, slo-motion footage, and motion effects from inside the motion tab of the viewer.

Hi, CJ!

Thanks for all your kind words about EditGroove’s UserMatic(TM).

We did put a lot of thought into its design, and are happy to know that it shows.

Regarding your one “Con”:
-- That’s correct, interacting with FCP itself is specifically disabled while FCP is running.

We’d love to make this happen as well, but unfortunately that’s a limitation posed by how Apple/FCP handles this preference data.

We could have enabled these buttons anyway, but the data would be incomplete or not up-to-date ... as much of it is kept in RAM, and not written out to the hard drive until FCP is Quit. So rather than take a chance on an incomplete Save or Recall, we deliberately designed UserMatic(TM) to treat this as a special situation, and bring that to the user’s attention. The best alternative was to offer information on WHY this is the case (both in the User Guide, and on-screen).

But as FCP evolves further, we’ll be eager to add that and other capabilities to UserMatic(TM).

Again, CJ, many thanks for all your kind words!

Best,
Ron Diamond
