Say that title 5 times fast. There are a few ways to duplicate a clip/sequence in Final Cut Pro. You can right (or control) click on an item and select Duplicate (or Duplicate as New Master Clip in the case of audio and video clips). This will create an exact copy of the file with the word “copy” appended after the original file name.
You can go to the Edit menu and choose duplicate or you can use the keyboard shortcut Option + D. However, there is also a handy dandy way to duplicate a clip from within the timeline.
When you are editing in the timeline and you want to duplicate (aka copy and paste) a clip you do not have to leave the timeline to do so. Simply hold down the Option key then click and drag the clip that you want to duplicate. Then let go of the option key and you will be dragging the new copied clip around your timeline! Let go of the mouse button to place the clip in the desired location.
What Can I Use This For?
- Copy a clip in the timeline that you would like to use in a different part of your edit.
- Duplicate a clip and drag it to the video track above the original in order to create interesting effects. For example, if you duplicate the clip and put it on top of the original you can play with the blending modes for interesting effects. You can also apply an effect/filter to the top clip and then play with it’s opacity to change the intensity of the effect. The possibilities are endless.
- Color correction. You can duplicate a clip and put it on the video track above another clip that you want to match the color to. Then you can simply click the visibility of the clip on and off while you color correct and then delete the duplicated clip when you are done.
I hope you all enjoyed this tip. If you have any other uses for the duplicate clips, please let us know in the comments!
