Help! Final Cut Pro Won’t Read The Audio In My MPG Files!

by CJ Bruce on August 5, 2008

If you have MPG files that were shot using a consumer camera or camcorder and you are trying to import them into Final Cut Pro, you may have some problems. Final Cut Pro 6 can handle them well, but I have experienced difficulty in getting the audio to work. The best work around I have found is to use MPEG Streamclip.

Open up MPEG Streamclip and locate the files that you need to convert. Click and drag them into MPEG Streamclip or go to File > Open and choose the file in question. Then simply go up to File > Export to Quicktime Movie. I leave all the settings the default and click Make Movie.

MPEG Streamclip will export a quicktime movie file in the same directory as your original file, except with a .MOV extension. Quicktime and Final Cut Pro should both read the audio from these files and life should be good.

If you have a lot of MPG files that you would like to batch convert, you can do this in MPEG Streamclip as well. Simply go to the List menu and click on Batch List or press Command+B. A dialogue box will pop up, click on add files, and select the files you would like to add to the list. Then keep all the settings the same and MPEG Streamclip will load them in a list. Click start and watch the magic begin!

Don’t forget to delete the old MPG files because they will just hang out and take up valuable space on your hard drive.
