How To Edit The Motion Properties Of A Nested Sequence

by CJ Bruce on July 16, 2008

This is one of those things that really irritated me for the longest time until I figured it out. If you are working with a lot of clips, you will inevitably end up having Nested Sequences. Nested sequences make it much easier to handle projects and to create more complicated effects than you could not do otherwise. Editing and animating their motion properties works a little differently than a normal clip however.

Normally, you simply double click a clip and it opens up in the viewer. Then you click on the Motion tab and you can edit and keyframe properties such as scale, position and opacity. When you double click a nested sequence however, it opens up the nested sequence and shows you what clips it contains. This is helpful, but not if you want to edit the motion properties.

To edit the motion properties, you must hold down the option key and double click the sequence. This will give you the same effect as when you double click a normal clip. You can then edit and animate the properties, filters, etc. just as you would if you were handling a single media file.

Hint: To create a nested sequence, simply select the desired clips in your timeline and press Option+C and Final Cut Pro will prompt you to give the sequence a name. Once completed, the clips will be replaced with your new sequence and the sequence will appear in the Browser window.
