Linking and Unlinking Clips In The Timeline

by CJ Bruce on December 9, 2008

By default any clips that you put into the timeline that contain audio and video are linked together. In other words, when you try to move/change speed/cut one, you do the same action to both. This can be frustrating, but thankfully it is very easy to separate the two.

How To Change The Link Relationship

In order to link or unlink a clip, click on either the audio or video track that is linked together. Then go to Modify > Link. This will change the link status of the clip. The keyboard shortcut for this is Command + L.

You will know a clip is linked when the titles of the audio and video tracks are underlined. When you unlink them, this underline disappears.

Why Change The Link Relationship?

  1. This is useful to re-sync audio that has gone out of sync
  2. You can use this to link up audio to video that was recorded separately. For example if you recorded someones voice after the footage was shot.
  3. You can link as many audio tracks you like to a single video track. So you can time out sound effects, music, and VO to a single video track then move them around your timeline together.
  4. Allows you to make changes to audio and video tracks separately and then link them back together.
